The Hoxton hotel recently opened a branch in Holborn which house the Chicken Shop down in the basement. The restaurant has different branches in Kentish Fown, Whitechapel, Tooting and now Holborn.
The name is a big hint on what the Chicken Shop serves – free range roasted chicken.
The menu is simple which gives you the choice of quarter, half or whole chicken. We ordered a whole chicken which is enough to share between two people. The chicken was beautifully cooked with the meat still moist.
The chicken is nice on its own, or add one of Chicken shop’s sauces – Hot sauce, Smokey sauce. I preferred the smokey sauce which is slightly spicy with a smokey flavour.
Along with the chicken you can orders one or more sides. The selection includes crinkle fries, lettuce and avocado salad, corn on cob and coleslaw. I was not very fond of the crinkles fries as it did not have that potatoes flavour and texture that you get from fries.
To finish the meal Chicken Shop has a selection of dessert that can be order. A favourite for many is the deep filled apple pie which comes served with cream or vanilla ice cream. But I would had prefer the option to have it with custard.
The pie had a nice pastry but I found the apple really sour. We struggled to finish the dessert because it was too sour and a scoop of ice cream was not enough to balance the sourness.
Alternative dessert on the menu are Chocolate Brownies and Lemon Meringue. The Chocolate Brownies was warm with a soft centre that was almost like a chocolate lava.
